Sara flicked her cigarette away as she sat in her parked Prius. She nervously tapped her fingers against the dashboard as she stared at the facade of Sophia's condo. It was 9 a.m. and she had finally called it a day after Ecklie had seen her in the lab and threatened her with forced vacation time if she kept accumulating overtime. He had already made her take the next night off and truthfully she needed it. She couldn't shake the image of the tortured woman from the warehouse. Every time she closed her eyes she saw the dead eyes staring at her accusingly. She normally would seclude herself away but right now she didn't want to be alone. She also felt guilty for being rude to Sofia. Sara opened her car door and took a deep breath before getting out. She just hoped that the detective hadn't gone to bed yet. She'd feel even worse if she woke her up.

Sara lightly knocked on the door and was surprised when it opened rather abruptly to reveal Sofia casually clad in jeans and a t-shirt. Sofia's eyebrows rose as she took in her visitor. "Hey.," Sara said, shyly. "Hey yourself.," Sofia replied. "I really hope that I didn't wake you." Sofia shook her head. "No, I'm glad you came by." Sara looked like she needed a hug and it tore at Sofia but after this morning, she was hesitant to touch the brunette. "I'm really sorry about this morning. I don't know what my problem is. This case is just getting to me." Sofia leaned against her doorway while she listened to Sara's heartfelt apology. She was relieved that she hadn't been the cause of Sara's aloof behavior but it was troubling that after they seemed to be making so much progress that now Sara had taken a step back by pushing her away. Perhaps though, it was progress that Sara had cared enough to apologize.

"I know what you mean about the case.," Sofia said. "I've been having trouble forgetting about it myself." Sara could see that the blonde spoke the truth as she gazed into eyes as troubled as her own. She didn't fight the urge to reach out and squeeze Sofia's shoulder lightly. Sofia smiled in response and wrapped her hand around Sara's bicep and stroked it with her thumb. Neither was sure who initiated the hug that followed. It was just something that happened naturally like two molecules drawn together to cause a reaction. Both women sighed and took comfort from the warm embrace.

The sound of a loud crash of something breaking caused both women to jump. Sofia turned to look back into her apartment and Sara frowned. "Are you alone?," she asked. Sofia shrugged. "Well, not exactly."

She did not expect the tensing in Sara's frame that followed. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt." Sofia's head was spinning from the abrupt turn in the conversation. It finally registered that Sara had turned around and was walking away. "Damnit, Sidle!" Sofia jogged to catch up with the brunette and grabbed one arm and spun her around to face her. Sara was putting up a good front but Sofia could see a sliver of hurt in her eyes. She put both hands on Sara's face and pulled her in. Sara was motionless when Sofia's mouth met hers but Sofia was patient and continued lightly nipping at Sara's lips. Sara's resistance crumbled when Sofia teasingly ran her tongue along Sara's lower lip. She pulled Sofia's body into hers and both were kissing as if their lives depended on it. Sara smiled as she heard Sofia growl when she squeezed her ass with both hands. Both women started laughing and Sofia turned red at her verbalization.

Sofia brought her forehead to rest against Sara's as both caught their breath. "Sara, what I was going to tell you is that I'm not technically alone because I have a cat. When you knocked on my door, I was getting ready to feed him and he probably knocked something off of the counter. He can be quite ornery." Sara was speechless for a moment. Her only thought when Sofia had said she wasn't alone was that Sofia had been with another person. She and Sofia hadn't exactly discussed being exclusive. Hell, they hadn't even really gone out on a date yet. She felt really stupid now that she realized that a feline was the other party.

"You have a cat?" Sofia nodded. "Why? Does that surprise you?" Sara bit her lip and shrugged sheepishly. "Yeah a little. I kinda figured you more for a dog person." "I like all kinds of animals. It's just with the hours I keep I figured it would be easier on a cat and Cagney and I have been together for years." Sara smiled and let out a laugh. "His name is Cagney?" "Yeah, come on in and meet him." Both women turned back to the condo and walked inside. It was Sara's turn to stand around observing the detective's surroundings. Sofia's condo had a much warmer feeling than Sara's own did to her. They both shared a love of books which was evident by Sofia's large bookcase in the living room. Sofia had black and white photographs of different landscapes hanging on the walls. Sofia watched Sara looking around the room and headed to the kitchen to clean up whatever Cagney had knocked over.

Sara continued looking around and saw several framed photographs on an end table. The first one was of two adults with two little children. Sara smiled as it sunk in that the little girl was Sofia. It was a family photograph in a beach setting. A young Sofia was building sand castles with a little boy while her parents looked on. The next photograph was of Sofia and an older woman in police dress uniforms. Captain Curtis was an impressive looking woman with blonde hair shorter than her daughter's and gray eyes instead of Sofia's blue. If Captain Curtis was anything to go by, Sofia would age very well. The next photograph was of Sofia in between two smiling men. The one had a very kind smile and his eyes were the same shade of blue as Sofia's. This must be her father. The other man had a Mediterranean complexion with dark hair and eyes. The last photo was of Sofia playing rugby with a young man. Sara smiled at the dirt covering the pair. Both were covered in mud and had bloody scrapes but were smiling. It was a bittersweet feeling seeing these glimpses into Sofia's past and then comparing it with her own rather violent and dark background.

Sara felt something rub up against her leg and almost dropped the picture. Holding her hand to her chest and trying to catch her breath, she looked down to see a large orange and white cat continuing to rub up against her leg. "Cagney, I presume?" The cat meowed as if answering her and Sara carefully sat on the floor and held out her hand for him to nudge. Cagney was purring loudly and Sara rubbed her hands through his soft fur.

Sofia came out of the kitchen and grinned at Sara with a lap full of Cagney. "I see you've already met.," she said dryly. Sara nodded. "He certainly is friendly." Sofia pursed her lips in thought. "Actually he usually runs from strangers. There must be something about you he likes." Sara shot Sofia a disbelieving look and arched her eyebrows. Sofia playfully shoved Sara from where she stood above her. "I'm not buttering you up. If I wanted to do that there are far different ways to go about it." She paused and playfully stroked her chin before continuing, "I could tell you I think you're a fantastic investigator though I worry that you don't get enough time away. I could tell you that you're really cute when you bite your lip and you've gotten stuck on something when looking at the evidence." Sara blushed and looked away. "I could tell you that when I feel your eyes on me I lose my train of thought.," Sofia continued. Sara locked eyes with Sofia and Sofia stopped speaking. Sara's gaze was full of heat and it took Sofia's breath away. Cagney gave a meow of indignation as he was pushed out of Sara's lap as she reached up and tugged on the pockets of Sofia's jeans. Sofia allowed herself to be pulled down to the floor on her knees. Sofia closed her eyes while Sara explored the contours of her face with her fingers. Sara touched the soft skin reverently as if trying to memorize its texture. She paused on the still healing cut on Sofia's cheek and lightly touched it with her thumb. Sofia exhaled sharply when she felt Sara's lips where her thumb had been. Sara's hands were in her hair and she continued planting light kisses on the blonde's face deliberately missing her mouth. Sofia bit her lip in frustration as Sara kissed along her jaw line. Sara couldn't seem to get enough of Sofia's skin. She was enjoying how responsive Sofia was to her touch. She smiled against Sofia's neck when she felt Sofia's hands on her back. She grabbed Sofia's wrists and moved them off of her body. Sofia groaned in protest but allowed Sara to set the pace. She continued to tease Sofia by lightly biting her neck and then soothing the abused skin with her tongue. Sofia's breath was becoming labored as she struggled to not touch Sara back. Sofia felt her nipples harden as Sara ran her nails up beside her spine creating a pleasant tingling in their wake. She then moved her fingers over Sofia's ribs and up the sides of her full breasts. Sofia growled and before Sara knew it, Sofia had broken from her hold and Sara was on her back with an over heated detective hovering over her. Sofia held her body suspended above Sara's, watching her face to make sure she hadn't startled her. Sara stared up into eyes that were almost black with a narrow ring of blue. Sofia was radiating heat which Sara could feel even though an inch of air separated their bodies.

"Please Sara.," Sophia whispered. Sara battled with her instinctual need to be in control and invulnerable. It was not hard for her to admit her attraction to the woman above her. What frightened and intrigued her at the same time was the connection she felt had formed between them. It was like Sofia could see into Sara's darkness and instead of being repulsed, she walked closer every day. Sara slowly reached up and pulled Sofia down on top of her. Sofia released the breath she had been holding and relaxed on top of Sara, wrapping her arms around her and taking in the sensation of their whole bodies being in contact. Sara was completely caught off guard by the move. She had expected Sofia to immediately take control and ravish her. Sofia's combination of intense desire and infinite patience was disarming Sara completely. Sofia leaned up and kissed Sara causing heat to spread quickly throughout Sara's body. Sofia could taste cigarettes, the breath mint that Sara had tried to cover it up with, and something uniquely Sara as they continued to kiss on the floor. She could feel Sara's hands exploring her back and she gasped as she felt nails lightly dragging on her skin. Sara bit her lip when Sofia arched her body into hers as her nails made contact with her back. She could feel the blonde's well muscled thigh between her legs and her eyes snapped up to meet the electric blue gaze. Both women seemed to be standing on an invisible line. Sofia could see her own vulnerability and fear reflected back at her in the intense brown gaze. It would be so much easier if this was just about sex. Sara's hands wrapped around Sofia's hips and pulled creating a delicious friction between their overheated bodies. Sofia responded by curling her arms behind Sara's shoulders and going with the rhythm that Sara was setting.

A loud buzzing sounded from the wooden coffee table a few feet away. Both women were lost in each other and content to ignore it but the insistence of the sound caused Sofia to groan into Sara's neck in frustration. "God dammnit!" Sofia reluctantly slid back from Sara's body and snatched the black cell phone off of the table. "Curtis!," she practically barked.

"Whoa, Sofie! I'm sorry did I wake you up?" Brass' voice was full of concern. Sofia took a deep calming breath. "No, Jim, you didn't wake me. What's up?"

"I really hate to do this to you since you were just here but we're really swamped here. I got called and C.S.I. is swamped too. Which reminds, me have you seen Sara? Grissom is looking for her." Sofia covered the phone for a moment and looked to Sara. "Brass says Grissom is looking for you.," she whispered. Sara frowned in response. "Ecklie forced me to take the night off because of overtime.," Sara whispered back. Sofia didn't know what to say to that. She was pretty sure that Sara didn't want Brass to know that she was sitting on her floor with a particularly fetching sheen of sweat on her body and kiss bruised lips. "Uh no Brass, I haven't seen her. Did you try paging her?"

"No, I think he tried her cell but either way I could really use you here. I promise I'll try and make it up to you." Sofia smiled at the genuineness of Brass' statement. "It's fine, Jim. Want me to pick you up some coffee on the way?" Jim laughed. "It's the only thing I'm running on at the moment." "Alright I'll see you in a little while." Sofia collapsed the flip phone shut and tossed it back on the table. Sara looked at her sympathetically. "So.....guess we have to go in huh." Sofia rubbed her face in irritation at their interruption. "Yeah looks that way." Both women stared at each other a little embarrassed at what had transpired on the floor and both not close to being satisfied. Sara was fidgeting with a loose thread on her pant leg and Sofia was sitting with her arms clasped around both legs, rocking back and forth. She sighed in frustration. Would this ever get easier? Sofia called on what little reserves she had left and forced herself to stand up from the floor. She bent down and extended a hand to Sara. Sara smiled and took the offered hand and allowed herself to be pulled up. Both women dusted themselves off and straightened clothing that had come askew during their impromtu make out session. "I'd better get my ass in the shower.," Sofia grumbled. "Yeah I need to head home and grab a change of clothes and a shower myself.," Sara replied smiling. Sofia was adorable when she pouted and Sara was positive the blonde didn't realize she was doing so. Both women walked towards the front door.

"Guess I'll see you there.," Sofia said, not wanting Sara to see how pissed at herself she was for almost losing control. She was trying really hard to respect that Sara wanted to go slow. Sara for her part could tell something was going on in the blonde's head but Sofia had that detective mask back up which was decidedly difficult to penetrate. She could appreciate all the times when people had complained that she was unreadable and at times untouchable. She and Sofia shared that in common. They would get lost in their own heads trying to figure out life's puzzles. Sara had quite a few puzzles on her mind, one of which was standing next to her in the doorway. She decided that a bit of levity was in order and leaned into Sofia sniffing the air. She scrunched her nose up. "Damn, Curtis! Better get into that shower." Sofia was shocked out of her thoughts by the offhanded remark. She glared at the smiling brunette. "I'll pretend for Grissom's sake that I didn't hear that. I would hate for him to be down a C.S.I." Sara laughed as she walked backwards to her car. "Promises promises, Curtis." Sofia grinned as she watched the brunette get into her car and pull out of the parking lot. "You have no idea.," she grumbled to herself as she shut the door.
