Happy New Year
by Zennie
The sound of fireworks and the occasional flash of light, just out of the corner of her eye, alerted Sara as she straightened, easing the kinks out of her back as she settled the camera more firmly on her shoulders. "Must be midnight," she observed to her colleague, who was charting blood spatter.
"Yup," Catherine replied absently, her mind on her work, at least until the youngest member of their squad came running up. "So who's going to kiss me?" Greg demanded, his eyes glued on the tall brunette.
"I, ah, think I'm going to sit this one out," Sara declined, her eyes cast downward, pretending to be looking for more evidence.
"She can't do that, can she?" Greg turned to Catherine, his voice rising into a teasing whine. "It's tradition."
Catherine finally looked up from her chart and observed the antics of her coworkers, secretly pleased by Sara's obvious discomfort. "No, I don't think she can."
A huge grin spread across Greg's face as he started forward, but the blonde was quicker. She crossed to where the brunette was standing and raised her head, capturing her lips for a brief kiss before the taller woman really knew what was happening. Greg's gasp behind her was echoed by the taller woman as they broke apart. She stood gaping as Catherine turned to Greg and told him, smugly, "What, you thought she was going to kiss you?"
Greg muttered under his breath good-naturedly as he headed back out to process the perimeter as Catherine turned back to her still-blushing coworker, who mumbled a quick "Thanks" without looking up from the ground she was intently studying.
"No problem," Catherine waved it off, a bit disappointed by the brunette's reaction. As she turned away, Sara's quiet voice caught her. "Um, Catherine?" As she turned back to the brunette, she found herself caught up in a strong grip as the Sara kissed her soundly while fireworks exploded overhead. Sara's amused half-smile greeted her when she finally opened her eyes. "Happy New Year."
Returning the smile with a wide one of her own, Catherine replied, "It just might be."
